KAGEMUSHA presents BROTHER DRUM
at the Gloucester Guild Hall

On the evening of Friday 11th June 1999 I was back at the Guild Hall, Gloucester to see the BROTHER DRUM ENSEMBLE a nine piece band of two different musical cultures, five members performing Japanese type music, and four members (who are actually a band in their own right called PRESSGANG) performing Folk Music.

The following tracks were performed on the night:-

SET 1
GILDEROY - for this track the band came on stage one by one
SLIPJIG - this was performed by all nine members of the band
THIS RHYTHM IS MINE - bass, female vocals solo
FAMILY QUARREL - a very clever four vocals solo from the members of PRESSGANG
DEATH & THE LADY - ensemble
HONO DAIKO - two Taiko Drums and Flute
AWAY THE BORDERS - ensemble
EVENSONG - focus on Shakuhachi then Big Drum centre stage
SET 2
SHAKUHACHI & WHISTLE SOLO
ANTHEM - ensemble
BAD BREAD - ensemble
LOCK THE GATES - ensemble
BOSWORTH - ensemble
TUESDAY MORNING - hammered dulcimer solo
NI CHO - Taiko Drums only (with crouching)
BROTHER DRUM - Taiko Drums and three vocals upfront
ISLAND HOPPING - ensemble with dance drumming (four people swapping places on the drums)

I thought the way the two different styles of music came together was very clever and I especially liked TUESDAY MORNING and ISLAND HOPPING.
